Our Initiatives
Protecting Global Wetlands
The Economic Times asserts that wetlands are essential to human life. They encompass 12.1 million square kilometers in total and contribute 40.6% of the value of ecosystem services worldwide. Wetlands not only safeguard biodiversity and the livelihood of underprivileged populations, but they also have 12 times more capacity to sequester carbon than trees.
In India, wetlands comprise nearly 15 million hectares, or 5% of the country’s total land area. These wetlands are protected and provide a living for nearly 4.8 million people, the majority of whom are indigenous marginal farmers and fishermen. Unfortunately, these wetlands are frequently ignored and become targets of urbanization. It is clear that the ecosystem services provided by these wetlands are not valued as integral parts of the nation’s Gross Development Product (GDP). Per square kilometer of urbanized land, India is losing 25 square kilometers of wetlands annually.
Inclusive Economics believes that it is crucial to preserve the benefits of wetlands and sustainably increase their ecological services. Please support our work by clicking the below button:
